As we all know Beowulf is a war hero that withstood the fierce strength of many monsters that is until the Dragon came along but I guess you could call it a tie since they both perished. To me Beowulf resembles the great Archangel Michael. Archangel meaning chief of the angels. Some characteristics that they share in common are bravery, leadership, honor and loyalty.
Beowulf’s many characteristics are mostly shown in the mead hall or during a fight. A great example of a characteristic that is demonstrated a lot throughout the book is loyalty. A really good example of it is when he arrives at lord Hygelac’s palace and gives the king all the gifts he received from Hrothgar. Truth be told I would’ve kept it all but this is about Beowulf so we shall continue to talk about the great hero’s deeds and characteristics. Not only was Beowulf a great hero but he was also a great leader commanding the Geats.
As we compare Michael the
archangel to Beowulf we see how they are both brave in situations that most of
us would’ve backed out off. In Jude 1:9 Michael actually rebuked the devil, I
mean who would ever in their right mind dare to do such a thing. As we can see
he a brave and courageous person/heavenly being. Granted they both might be a little
crazy for doing things most of us wouldn’t do but that’s what it means to
actually be hero.
“Even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” Jude 9:1
The resemblance between Michael’s
story and Beowulf’s is astonishing they are almost both exactly the same except
for a few differences here and there. We can compare them both actually and see
how they differ. Beowulf serves Hygelac and is loyal to him while Michael is
loyal to the Lord, they both have many encounters against evil, and they both
actually fought a dragon. In Revelation 12:7-12 Michael and his angels fought
with against Satan that was in form of a dragon.
“And war broke out in heaven: Michael
and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought,
but they did not prevail nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer”.
Rev 12:7-12
Lastly as the Geats and Danes
would say "Worship and glory belong forever to the eternal King, the
immortal, invisible, and only God. Amen" 1 Timothy 1:17
